Environmental Sustainability Education Pathway

within the M.Ed. in Integrative STEM Program 

This pathway helps practicing teachers across the preK-12 spectrum deepen their content knowledge in Environmental Sustainability Education (ESE) and develop the skills and tools they need to become green leaders in their schools.

This four-course (12-credit) pathway is designed for teachers who wish to transform their teaching practice with interdisciplinary perspectives on Environmental Sustainability Education. (To view all pathways offered for the M. Ed. in Integrative STEM Education, please click here.)  Coursework is focused on applying knowledge and designing solutions to many of the challenges we face in our classrooms and in the world.  Courses in this program are all offered using a hybrid format including face-to-face instruction alongside asynchronous and synchronous remote learning modules.

  • ESED 501: Environmental Science for Teachers and Leaders
  • ESED 520:  EcoJustice and Socioscientific Issues
  • ESED 600:  Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Environmental Sustainability Education
  • STEM 641:  Biotechnology Systems and Sustainable Design

Summer and Fall 2021 Course Schedule

Summer I:  May 24 – June 11 

ESED 501: Environmental Science for Teachers & Leaders
Learn strategies for integrating environmental science topics across the curriculum K-12 in NGSS- aligned efforts. Build the skills to serve as a green leader in your school.

Blended format with synchronous class meetings Tuesdays 6-8 PM.

Summer Session II: June 14 – July 15 

ESED 600: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Environmental Sustainability Education
Students in this course will learn to use inclusive practices in environmental sustainability education across all content areas and grade levels.

Tuesdays 5-7 PM.

Fall 2021: August 30 – December 10

ESED 520: EcoJustice and Socioscientific Issues
Advocate for social and environmental justice in your classroom and beyond! This course, ideal for teachers across the K-12 spectrum, uses a problem-solving approach to multidisciplinary instruction. Blended format with synchronous class meetings.

Wednesdays 5:00-7:50 PM in person and livestreamed.
